Happy Happy Happy

This  Zygocactus (Schlumbergera truncata) is bringing me joy and happiness with the start of opening it's flowers!

Interestingly, Zygocactus, frequently called CHRISTMAS CACTUS originated from the branches of trees in South American jungles. Worldwide hybridization has made available the multiple colors of light and dark pink, salmon, fuchsia, white, red and yellow blooms. It blooms naturally once a year around Christmas.

Today, we are having a very overcast day which is making picture taking a challenge.

With all the recent difficult events in my life I am working on staying in the moment and feeling gratitude for all my blessings.

And, this little sweetheart is certainly helping me to Get My Happy On!

I hope your day is a Happy Day.

A New Day

I welcome a day to "catch my breath". A little sleep can do wonders for an old - I mean young - lady.

It's a comfort to know that my friend is settled in nicely at Foothill Village. The quality of his voice on the phone sounds so much better. And, his attitude is good. I love these Blessings.

Thanksgiving plans have changed over and over and over again. Really. Now the plan is that my friend will have Thanksgiving dinner at the Village. His son and wife will come this evening and have dinner with him tomorrow and take care of other matters.

I will be celebrating the holiday with my daughter and husband in San Jose which is a three hours drive for me. Because it is only family, my daughter has suggested that we celebrate with dinner on Friday so that I can get a little refreshed before traveling. And, that is wonderful for me. It is amazing what "24 hours" can do for a person! So, today I am doing very little but living quietly in Prayerful Thanksgiving for all my blessings, specifically for the God given strength I have received in this years journey which has been filled with many challenges.

Wishing all of you a Wonderful Thanksgiving weekend.

Monday Morning Or Mary In The Morning

When I started to write this post name  -  Mary In the Morning came to mind. Click here for lyrics.  The contemporary song was written in 1967 by American songwriter and record producer Michael Rashkow and singer Jonny Cymbal and was sung by many artists including Al Martino, Glen Campbell and Elvis Presley.  Just a little music from my era - long ago! Now you have your trivia for today!

I have heard the song many times.  ;-}

Anywayyyyyyyyyyyyyy -

Look Who Is Going To Be A Big Brother

This is so EXCITING! I can hardly believe that I am going to be a Great-Grandma for a second time. It is so WONDERFUL. The mommy and daddy are so very excited and happy about the timing. The baby is due in April 2015. Just like the Royals. They will be 22 months apart. It so happens that my children are 22 months apart, also. They have no preference about boy or girl. Just, desire a healthy happy baby!

I have known for a couple weeks and it is great that now I can talk about it.

These young folks sure have a lot of life on their plates. The daddy is very high energy, high achiever and a hard worker. Mama is a hard worker, also and a great mama. There is a lot to be said about being YOUNG. You know the saying "Oh, to be young again". It is such a great blessing that they are Very Happy with their lives and have a great love for each other. God willing they will have a lifetime of togetherness. I love you guys!

And, now for  a Flower Shot.

The Gourmet Popcorn Rose is continuing its delicate blooming among the Fig Tree leaves. Yesterday, I picked the last of the figs. They were very sweet. Maybe there will be more next year. It would be nice.

Be Thankful.

Morning Pampering Is Very Good

Actually, pampering is very good anytime. And, that is what I have been receiving for the last few days. First I was served a small fruit bowl and then my coffee and pastry was served. So nice, so spoiled!

Saturday morning, my friend picked me up and we went up to his house. He prepared a lovely dinner of filet mignon steak, baked potatoes and green salad with lots of added goodies. And, later we also enjoyed our current favorite desert of Breyer's Tiramasu ice cream. Boy! is that ice cream good, creamy and rich!!

Since I am not comfortable taking a shower at home alone (for safety reasons) I am able to take a shower at his place. I now have a wonderful water-proof cast cover for my leg that makes taking a shower so much easier and very nice. I am definitely noticing improvement of my leg fracture. It is less than two weeks and I will see the Orthopedic doctor for an X-ray and the next step of recovery.

I came home this afternoon (Monday) and it was great to have the help and pampering. He has been so very helpful and patient! He sure knows how to prepare an excellent medium rare steak!!

Lily is responding to her veterinary treatment and will see the Vet for X-rays and lab work again on Wednesday. She has been so very good, going outdoors often because of the diuretic that the Vet prescribed.

I have lots of blessings.

I hope your week is starting off well!

Doing Good

My precious is doing very well. She has responded nicely to the medications. I have a sleepy picture of her for you. Lily has the sweetest disposition even when she doesn't feel well. According to the Vet, her test results were very abnormal with one of them  having a number that was so high it was off the chart.

I am so tired today and will not be posting much today. More about Lily as time goes by. I am so grateful that she is responding well to treatment. Her Vet is wonderful!

Have a Good Day.

Lunch For One Plus More

I have had a wonderful day even though Blogger has given me a fair amount of difficulty. Also, the lighting for photo taking was less then ideal today. Lots of unwanted shadows, too. I am almost surprised that I was finally successful in completing this post.

It is so fabulous to feel such happiness and creativeness. The absence of unnecessary stress is far greater than I ever imagined. I had no real comprehension of just how detrimental my life style had become for me until hospitalization became necessary. I am feeling healthy and calm. In six weeks I have experienced abdominal discomfort only on two occasions! And, I can eat anything I desire without difficulties.

Now then, often my creativeness surfaces when I am in the kitchen. Frequently, I am inspired by recipes I read. Like many of us we also depend on what we have available to us in our pantry.

This is a quinoa meal that was fun to make.  It is the first time that I have made anything with quinoa. I think it is kind of funny looking and it does not have a very distinctive flavor. So, the ingredients that we add to it are very important especially the seasonings. I understand that it is healthy for us. And, that is good!

I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch. Along with a glass of chilled Gewurztraminer it was a beautiful blend of yummy flavors.

The quinoa was prepared and then onion, celery and garlic were added. Chopped dried cranberries were added next which gives them some time to soften.

This is the greatest little kitchen gadget for peeling garlic. It is so quick. And, then I used a micro-plane to grate the garlic.

Next, I added some Cranberry Pear Balsamic Vinegar. Wow, this is very nice. It has a lovely fragrance and flavor. I am able to purchase this in my little town at Marisolio Olive Oil Company.

Then, I added some local Calaveras Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It is so nice to have such good quality products so close by to purchase.

The chopped cranberries along with the cranberry pear balsamic vinegar is a very nice combination of flavors.

If you plan to serve your quinoa mixture in acorn squash "bowls" be sure to prepare them ahead of time by baking them in the oven before you start the quinoa.

Some chopped pistachio nuts sprinkled on top of the plated stuffed squash is a great touch especially with the added texture they impart. I also like to add a little garnish of parsley. I have some growing in the garden and I try to use it when it is available.

Let me tell you a little story about myself. This will not surprise some of you that know me. When I went to get the pistachio nuts from the pantry, I could not locate them. And, I knew I had bought them. Well, when I found them (see above) the bag was more than half empty. I forgot that I had evening snacked on them a few days earlier! Bad girl, bad girl!

Fear Not

So, so many changes in my life. When I saw this charming little picture in blogland it really struck me in a way that it never would have in the years past. It is so great to have freedom to maintain my home and myself as well as come and go as I wish without constant questions!  However, I will always welcome healthy attention and sharing.

I am feeling so good even though there is a long list of projects that need attention. And, that list includes repairing the kitchen sink reverse-osmosis water filtration system. Annoyingly, it hasn't been working for the past two years.

The front and back door need to be painted because Lily tends to scratch when she wants to come in. Because I did not start her with the pet door when she was very young she has a big aversion to it. One reason may be that it is spring-loaded. However, I recently removed the spring mechanism but it hasn't changed her behavior. I guess this shows how important "early training" can be!

With this cold weather that we are having at the present, I am constantly reminded that the weather stripping/insulation on the doors need to be installed. However, I would like to paint the door frames and doors before putting the weather stripping on. The weather prediction includes snow.

Those seem to be the most urgent tasks. And, of course, the under-cabinet kitchen fixture takes priority.

And, then there are the fun projects (sewing, knitting, crocheting, thrifting, home decor, crafting, cooking and baking) that I am eager to pursue again on a regular basis.

LILY UPDATE: She has resumed her Happy-Healthy behavior and personality. We are blessed.

Take Good Care of Yourself and Others.

I Am Ready To Return

After a month break from blogging, I am feeling happy and I am regaining my health. Last month I underwent light anesthesia and received three epidural steroid injections into my spine where the nerve roots exit the spinal canal in the lumbar region. The nerve pain in my left leg which radiated down to my ankle had become so severe that every day life had become a big struggle. Through a lot of prayer and little luck I managed to find doctors who guided me to find a doctor that worked on the development of injection therapies, years ago, that have shown significant success. And, now I have become one of his recipients of a successful procedure. No more nerve pain, only some aching in my low back occasionally. I am ECSTATIC and feel tremendous GRATITUDE.  This procedure can be repeated every six months if needed and Medicare will pay for it. Many years ago I had a similar procedure but I did not receive any pain relief. I appreciate each and every day.

Also, my medical issues with my stomach ulcers are under control through the use of medications, very controlled dietary regime and stress reduction. It has become clear to me and the doctors that the cause of all the abdominal distress was related to personal life stress and nothing else. I am looking forward to complete healing!

The week before the spinal injections, for reasons unknown, my blood pressure took a nosedive and was registering 80/40. Not good! This has happened in the past. Also, I have had episodes of very abnormal elevated blood pressure. Medications have been adjusted again by the cardiologist and I am doing well. This is called Labile Hypertension and I have been treated for this since I was 29 years old.

Let me tell you, I am a very happy lady and I look forward to blogging more regularly.

Hope all your Valentines were happy surprises!

Waking Up To Chain Saws And Spanish Voices

And, the  sawdust was flying!

Right behind my house and outside the living room window a very large old oak tree was being cut down. As you may know, my little house is surrounded by many, many trees. And, through the years they have grown tremendously tall and created so much shade that the house is quite dark inside. Ordinarily, I would not like to see trees cut down, however this old tree has been diseased for quite some time and the neighbors (who visit their second home, only occasionally) decided to have it cut down.

Let me tell you, this is truly a huge blessing for me. I function best and feel healthier when I am in bright sunshiny areas. And, now when I walk into the living room each morning the room is bright and alive.  I LOVE IT ~ I LOVE IT. If any of you experience issues around SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) you will understand my delight in such a change of ambient light. Oh, I also have an added bonus and this is that my "white garden" is going to be a lot happier with the increased sunshine. Maybe, my Black Beauty Fig Tree that resides in the "white garden" might produce fruit next year!

Tree cutters are certainly in a class of their own, in my opinion. If they don't pay close attention to what they are doing, the consequences can be disastrous! This is quite a silhouette picture, isn't it?

Have yourself a Wonderful Weekend.

Thanksgiving Blessings To All

There have been so many blessings in my life during this year. At times it has been very challenging but I could not ask for a better year. I have learned a lot about myself that I never would have known if I had not met a very special person. We have grown together in so many ways and he has shown me how very much he cares for me by putting aside unhealthy behaviors and focusing on the well being of the two of us. It is a very happy time.

We will be spending a large family Thanksgiving at his daughter's home which is only an hour or so away from my home. I have spent many holidays alone during the past years and I am really looking forward to a festive Thanksgiving in a family setting. In so many ways I feel as if I have a family again!

My granddaughter will be working and making good money with holiday pay and that will help her with her goals of obtaining a college education. I am looking forward to seeing her during the month of December when we will get together again. I miss her.

I would like to wish everyone a nice Holiday and express my gratitude for many new acquaintances in blogland and profound appreciation for renewed friendships and new friends in my little world.

I send wishes to all for a very enjoyable Holiday weekend.
